Throwing a party for your child can be a lot of fun, but there are things you should think about in addition to food and location. There are other people and issues to consider when having a birthday party.

Do: Have a Theme

The theme can be as simple as “birthday party” with some streamers, balloons and a banner that says “Happy Birthday.” Or you could go further and have a character your child likes as the theme. Or a color theme. But don’t have people walk into your home or other location (unless it’s a restaurant where you probably can’t do much) like they would at any other time of year. If it doesn’t seem to be a special time to your family, it won’t be special to the guests. Themes don’t have to cost a lot of money, it’s just minor decoration, most of which you can find at a party supply store or a dollar store. Do: Prepare Games and Prizes

Even if the party is one at your home and it’s very casual, there should be something for the guests to do. For children this is as easy as a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Again games and prizes don’t cost a lot. You can make little prize bags of candy yourself. You could even have something set up for the adults, such as board games like Scrabble. You don’t want people to be dosing off at you child’s birthday party.

Don’t: Feel Obligated to Invite Everyone

This usually applies to children’s classes. Don’t invite everyone, especially if you simply can’t afford it. If you’re having the party at your home and can’t fit that many people, just invite a few children who your child is actually friends with. Avoid inviting a whole class, but leaving out two or three children. You don’t have to have a reason for only inviting a few children, other than that’s all you want to handle. You’ll certainly have enough to do with just a few plus your own children and family.

Don’t: Invite People Last Minute

There’s nothing more annoying than being called for a party two days ahead of time. There’s never enough time to get a gift and you feel completely rushed and not exactly thrilled about attending. Invite people at least 1 week ahead of time and if you want guests to R.S.V.P. then two to three weeks ahead of time is much better. Then if people cannot come, you can invite other people if that’s what you want.
